Hello everyone. Basically I just wanted to give some shout outs to some of my favorite Natural hair icons. Deciding to go natural and big chop was a huge decision, but seeing that some of my favorite celebrities were more and more becoming comfortable with their hair, did help me to love mine even more. I have links to each of their Wikipedia if you want even more fabulousness 🙂 Here are a few (in no particular order)
Whoopi Goldberg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoopi_Goldberg The Color Purple is one of my favorite movies of all time! She rocked the 1st thick 2 strand twist. Whoopi is an amazing actress and comedian. We all love to hear her outspoken opinions every morning on the view. She has always stayed true to her signature natural locks.
Pam Grier https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pam_Grier Who doesn’t love Pam Grier?! Of course probably many of our mothers and fathers favorite from back in the day (especially our fathers lol) Her signature round fro was a silhouette everyone recognized.
Angela Davis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Davis All of us should know who Angela Davis is 🙂 More than an icon but also a political activist and author. Known for her relationship with the black panthers and through her strong involvement with the Civil Rights Movement. Even many years later, she still rocks a beautiful , curly, brown fro.
Grace Jones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Jones How fierce is Grace Jones??! very! 🙂 I can never get her blunt cut and in your face outfits out of my head. I loved her so much in The Boomerang opposite Eddie Murphy. Not only is she a singer, she crossed over to becoming a model, record producer and actress. Even at the age of 77 she still slays her natural hair.
Alicia Keys https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alicia_Keys I know im not the only one who was singing Fallen to the top of their lungs while also trying to copy Alicia’s zig zag cornrolls. Her voice and style has always been top-notch. Not only is she a great songstress, pianist and actress, she is also the co-founder and global ambassador to Keep a Child Alive, a non-profit organization which administers medication to families with HIV and AIDs in Africa. Go Alicia!
Nina Simone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Simone A great singer, great pianist, civil rights activist, and more! I fell in love with her gorgeous smile, thick lips, and beauty. I watched a documentary about her life on Netflix a while back. I fell in love with her spirit all over again. If you havent seen a movie based on her life you must! She was in my eyes a hands down genius.
Jada Pinkett Smith https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jada_Pinkett_Smith We all know who Mrs Jada is!! I have been a fan since The InkwellLow Down Dirt Shame is one of my all time favorite movies. She made me fall in love with a very short cut, I thought if Jada can rock this, I know I can slay it.
Solange https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solange_Knowles Solange has come a long way since just being known as Beyonce’s little sis. She has always showcased her natural main wheather it is her signature curly fro or her short crop after she big chopped. I have enjoyed following her hair styles and eclectic fashion choices.
Tracee Ellis Ross https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracee_Ellis_Ross Can we say Joan?!! Of course we all remember the show Girlfriends, and the daughter of the great Diana Ross. Tracee never stayed in her mothers shadow, she has made a name for herself. I love her as an actress and she is also very funny. You can catch her on Blackish which is becoming a favorite for many.
Corrine Bailey Rae https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corinne_Bailey_Rae I love this woman! She is a British singer/songwriter whose voice is so angelic. Her songs ‘Put Your Records On’ and ‘Like A Star’ play on repeat in my home all the time. She has a simple yet strong presence that I enjoy. I remember she performed on The Oprah show and the audience was so silent, just soaking up her angelic voice and spirit.
