I decided to go natural November 2012 after seeing the growing community and just went for it. I didn’t do much research and was very green to the whole concept. Here are 7 things I wish i knew beforehand:
IT IS NOT GONA BE EVERYONES CUP OF TEA
When I first went natural I got a lot of looks and even more questions. Everyone is not going to understand your choice or even like how it looks. When going natural, make sure you do it for yourself and others opinions wont matter.
YOU WILL TRY A LOT OF PRODUCTS UNTIL YOU FIND YOIR HOLY GRAIL
Lets be real here, some natural hair products can be costly. Especially when you use so many componets (shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner, edge control, oils, etc) It may take a while and a few dollars before you find products that will work best for YOUR hair.
WASH AND GO DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN LITERALLY JUST WASH AND GO
I learned this the hard way lol it actually is a time consuming process depending on your hair type. From wetting the hair, adding products, and a lot of detangeling it can take longer than expected. Dont forget time to dry.
THE WASH DAY PROCESS
My washday takes hours and I usually plan my day around it. After shampooing I like to let my conditioner sit for at least an hour. I stretch my hair and let air dry. No heat. So plan to stay home for a while lol
IMPORTANCE OF THE LOC METHOD
We all have dealt with dryness. The LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method really has worked for me to retain moisture to my strands. I section, spray with water, add oil (which locks in the moisture) then a hair cream of my choice. This keeps my hair very moisturized and easy to style.
HEAT CAN BE A BIG NO NO
I hardly use a blow dryer anymore. I fried my hair with flat irons over the years and had to cut away the damage. Use heat as less as possible and let the hair airdry if you can.
I DEVELOPED A CONFIDENCE I DIDNT KNOW I HAD
It is important to have a great sense of self worth and self esteem. Since going natiral, I am more confident then I have ever been. Feeling beautiful in my own hair, grown from my head and enjoying my curls is of great importance to me. That is all my 14 yr old daughter knows me as and because I have loved my hair she also loves her natural hair!
